Breaths

Description:

Like breath, accordion music is built from inhalations and exhalations. The sound of the instrument evokes an enormous mechanical lung. To me, this gives accordion music a strange vocal quality. Breaths explores the accordion as a substitute for the human voice, from the short, gasping panic breaths that open the piece, to the broad, bel canto singing at its climax.
